Claire Chase's pioneering recording project, Density 2036, is an ambitious, 24-year initiative that redefines the sonic possibilities of the flute. Launched in 2013, Chase commissions and premieres new flute compositions annually, culminating in a visionary collection of works that push creative boundaries and expand the repertoire of contemporary music.
Recording at FreshGrass Institute’s Studio 9 in North Adams, MA in partnership with Meyer Sound, Claire and her team utilized multiple recording sessions between January-May 2022 to record three installments from this ambitious series: Part VI (2019), Part VII (2020), and Part VIII (2021).
These recordings showcase Chase's relentless pursuit of innovation, featuring collaborations with leading contemporary composers such as Olga Neuwirth, Phyllis Chen, Pamela Z, Sarah Hennies, and the mesmerizing Sex Magic by Liza Lim. Each installment reveals Chase's extraordinary virtuosity and her unwavering commitment to exploring the flute's expressive potential.

Claire Chase, described by The New York Times as “the North Star of her instrument’s ever-expanding universe,” is a pioneering flutist, interdisciplinary artist, and educator dedicated to championing contemporary music.
A MacArthur Fellow and recipient of Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Prize, she has premiered hundreds of new works and performed internationally as a soloist with leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and London Philharmonia. Chase’s expansive discography encompasses eight solo albums featuring world premiere recordings alongside numerous collaborations across diverse musical genres
