Floating Tower

As part of FreshGrass' ongoing commitment to supporting refugee and immigrant artists, Studio 9 partnered with Floating Tower—a year-round retreat for displaced musicians based at the historic Chase Hill estate in North Adams—for a pro bono recording session, piloted by Iranian vocalist Mahya Hamedi. The session brought together Hamedi, composer/pianist Mátti Kovler, and violinist/electronics artist Todd Reynolds for an hour-long live improvisation, recorded by engineer Dave Dennison courtesy of MASS MoCA.

The resulting music was later featured in Radiant Nights, a light and video installation by Joe Wheaton at Hancock Shaker Village in December 2024. You can see more of their session on their Instagram here!

About the artist

The Kabbalistic image of a tower materializing out of thin air suggests something that cannot be touched, but rather witnessed, or felt.

Floating Tower's mission is to create music and theatre experiences that transcend boundaries of language, geography or genre.

While many of our events spring from a Jewish impulse they aim to speak to a universal audience. The company's core collective is comprised of immigrant and refugee actors-musicians based in the US. We also operate an artist retreat in North Adams, MA where we workshop our immersive works and host immigrant and refugee musicians for artist residencies.
